Eye Safety During the Holidays: Choosing Gifts with Vision in Mind

The holiday season is filled with the joy of giving, but amidst the excitement, it’s easy to overlook an important consideration: eye safety. Many popular toys and tech gifts can pose potential risks to children’s vision, making it essential to prioritize safety when selecting presents.

 

The Risk of Toy-Related Eye Injuries

Each year, approximately 217,000 children in the U.S. visit emergency rooms due to toy-related injuries, with nearly half involving the face and head. Toys that shoot projectiles—like BB guns, airsoft guns, and Nerf guns—are especially concerning. Even if a child seems responsible enough to handle these toys, accidents happen, and one poorly aimed shot can result in a serious eye injury.

 

To prevent such incidents, consider providing safety goggles along with these toys and supervise children during playtime. Taking these simple precautions can significantly reduce the likelihood of eye injuries—and keep your holiday free of unexpected trips to the eye doctor.

 

Beware of Laser Pointers

Many shooting toys now include laser pointers for aiming, but lasers can be harmful to the eyes. Even brief exposure to a laser beam can cause eye damage, so it’s important to ensure these devices are used responsibly.

 

When purchasing toys with lasers, check the power output, measured in milliwatts. Lasers with power levels under 5 milliwatts are less likely to cause permanent damage, but anything higher poses a serious risk to the retina. Educate children to avoid pointing lasers at their own or others’ eyes and supervise their use to ensure safety.

 

Managing Screen Time for Digital Gifts

Tech gadgets like tablets and smartphones are popular holiday gifts, but excessive screen time can lead to eye strain, fatigue, and dry eye syndrome. To help mitigate these effects, encourage children to follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away.

 

Consider gifting blue light-filtering glasses along with digital devices. These glasses can reduce exposure to blue light, helping to protect developing eyes from potential strain and discomfort.
