IPL treatment for dry eyes now available at Blake Bush Family Eye Care

If you've ever experienced the discomfort of dry eyes, you know just how frustrating and irritating it can be. But there's exciting news in the world of optometry that might just offer the relief many have been waiting for: IPL or Intense Pulsed Light therapy.

Dry eye disease is often associated with irregularities or inflammation of the meibomian glands. When these glands get blocked or don’t function properly, the tear film on our eyes can evaporate too quickly, leading to that sandy, gritty feeling. IPL treatment can improve dry eye symptoms.

How does IPL Treatment work?

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy delivers short, powerful pulses of light that gently heats the skin around the meibomian glands. This helps liquefy and release oils that have hardened and clogged the meibomian glands in the eyelids. This improves the quality of the tears produced by these glands.

What to expect during an IPL treatment for dry eyes?

  • Safety first: Before the treatment begins, you'll be given protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the light.

  • Cooling gel: A cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area to not only protect your skin but also make the process more comfortable.

  • The IPL experience: The device will emit pulses of light on the skin around your eyelids. You might feel a warm sensation, or like a light rubber band snap. You may experience some redness and a little discomfort in the treated areas, but they are generally mild and will only last for a few minutes or hours after the session.

  • Post-treatment massage: After the IPL pulses, a gentle massage is done on the eyelids to help release the oils from the meibomian glands.

The entire process takes 15-20 minutes.

How effective is IPL for dry eyes?

Many patients report significant improvement in their dry eye symptoms after undergoing IPL treatments. IPL can reduce dryness, burning, and that itchy, gritty sensation. Some people see results after just one session. However, it's common for optimal results to be achieved after several treatments, depending on the severity of the dry eye condition.

Our primary goal is to provide the best possible care to our patients. If dry eye has been an issue for you, IPL might be the treatment you've been waiting for. To schedule a consultation or a dry eye appointment, call us at 580-223-7333 or schedule your exam online.
